Justice Fabric Live Mixtape

Ok so this isn’t really a Fabric Live mix but it could have been.

So here’s the story: Fabric ask Justice to put together a mix compilation for their popular Fabric Live series. They would have been following in the footsteps of the most excellent Cut Copy and Spank Rock mixes. So Justice decided to put together something a little different, something that would stand out from the crowd instead of just another fucking mixtape featuring all of the songs we have heard a billion times in the last 6 months.

“We didn’t want to do just another boring mix, so we put together a selection of tunes we absolutely love, mainly weird disco tracks and French novelty acts. But Fabric turned it down. They weren’t ready for something like this. Maybe we’ll put the mix out ourselves. People should really hear it, they’d be surprised.” - Xavier de Rosnay

So they released the mix themselves and dubbed it the Xmas mix. And here it is. Enjoy it, it is ten times better than you will ever be.

Mixtape

Mixtape é uma compilação de canções, normalmente com copyright e adquiridas de fontes alternativas, gravadas tradicionalmente em cassete. As canções podem encontrar-se de forma sequêncial ou agrupadas por características comuns como ano de publicação, gênero e outros aspectos mais subjetivos. Como consequência também tem surgido mixtapes de vídeos.

As primeiras e mais comuns mixtapes eram bootlegs em formato stereo 8, se vendiam nos chamados mercado das pulgas e em postos de gasolina desde os finais dos anos 60 até o começo dos 80 com nomes como Super 73, Country Chart Toppers ou Top Pops 1977. As compilações com o ano no título só podiam ser postas a venda antes do natal e no começo do ano, conseguindo assim bons resultados de venda.

Com a chegada do som digital para os consumidores de todo o mundo, a criação e distribuição das mixtapes tem evoluído de formato, os CDs e MP3 tornaram-se o método de escolha contemporânea, mas o termo mixtape ainda é comumente utilizado, mesmo para mixagens, em diferentes suportes (CD, MP3, MiniDisc, cassete, 8 track, etc.).

Não é um jogo de crianças, mas o um, dois, três é este: os Macacos do Chinês fazem da melhor música urbana que alguma vez saiu de Portugal. A atenção que Apache, o fazedor de beats do grupo, dá aos detalhes dos seus instrumentais é algo que merece ser celebrado. Alguém devia pô-lo a produzir ainda mais artistas variados. Skillaz, o MC, tem o flow, a voz e o sentido de humor ideais para os ritmos, mas o foco é o instrumental.
Sonicamente inventivos, os beats andam entre o dubstep, o grime, o hip-hop e outras músicas urbanas e têm, não raras vezes, um toque de guitarras – seja a eléctrica ou a portuguesa. As letras de Skillaz são bem intencionadas, mas nem sempre funcionam da melhor forma. “Rolling na Reboleira” é um bom conceito, o da relativa pobreza dos MCs portugueses face à opulência dos americanos, a história do ser-feliz-com-o-que-se-tem-porque-até-dá-pra-comprar-uns-ténis-Nike que até nem está mal contada, mas é o beat que mais sucumbe ao que se espera do hip-hop português em todo o disco. É uma falta de visão ser o primeiro single.

O resto é bem melhor. Na canção que fecha o disco, feita sob a perspectiva de um cão, o grupo envereda por uma onda próxima dos Lonely Island, o grupo rap humorístico americano; tem Nuno Lopes como o Chato, a personagem d’Os Contemporâneos, que goza com a estranheza das batidas. “Fala Bem”, com os Buraka Som Sistema, não se aproxima muito do kuduro mas está ao nível do melhor desse grupo.

Apesar de o instrumental ser a estrela, Skillaz tem umas boas saídas (sobre a saudade dos tempos da escola: “Eu não comia Smarties/ eu comia Pintarolas/ Eastpak era zero/ Montecampo reinava as escolas”), rima sobre esperar pelo autocarro e tantas outras coisas mundanas que mostram que esta gente é boa gente. Que faz um bom disco.

Yesterday we published a photo revealing Justice’s Gaspard Augé to be using a MIDI controller that wasn’t plugged in, and now they’ve responded to the allegations that the duo fake their live sets.

“I couldn’t remember the city but I think it was in Manchester,” he said.

“I didn’t notice at first, because as you can see I was looking at the computer to launch the next vocal hook and right after I realised that the blue screen went black, so there was no way possible it could work. So I plugged it back in, big deal! And the next thing you know is this picture.”

I guess we’ll never know if that’s a fib or not.

Como promotor foi o mentor de diversos eventos que marcaram a cena nacional, Dj Premier, A-Trak, Bonde Do Role ou Buraka Som Sistema são alguns dos nomes que fizeram crescer a marca Clube Mercado. Como dj, Manaia traz-nos algo fresco e pouco habitual nas noites nacionais, géneros como o ainda desconhecido em Portugal "Baltimore Club", o já conhecido "Baile Funk", o odiado/amado "Kuduro", ou os beats fortes do "Breakbeat" londrino... Diplo, A-Trak ou Sinden são referências habituais nos seus sets, no mínimo irreverentes!
